Hello everyone, and welcome to another season, it’s been a long winter this year and seems like we are getting a late start after such an early start last year. It’s that time of year again when you ask yourself; should I replace my equipment or not? If your driver, irons, and wedges are more than five years old; yes, it might be a good idea to start replacing them when you can afford to. I would at the very least replace your wedges. If you purchased new ones last year like I suggested, get another set if you can get them with the old grooves (we still have some left in the pro shop). All wedges manufactured now have the new conforming grooves.
Here is a sampling of what is new in drivers and irons that we are carrying in the pro shop this year from some of the major manufactures.
DRIVERS:
Callaway – They have some awesome drivers this year. There new Razr has put up some crazy long distances from the pros playing it. They made some improvements with the Diablo this year calling it the “Diablo Octane”. They kept the iZ driver in the line-up for 2011 which is one of the straightest drivers I have worked with.
Nike – Really stepped up and made some good improvements with their VR line this year expanding the sweet spot so miss hits still get some decent distance. They kept the adjustability into the club so you can set it up the way you want it.
Taylor Made – Their new R11 and Burner superfast 2.0 has made a new fashion statement in golf. Veering from the standard black head and opting to paint it white. Plenty of adjustability to set it up the way you like it. The only negative I have noticed is if the sun is just right the shaft can cast a shadow across the head, if you think this is something that would bother you then stick to the traditional black heads.
Cleveland – They made some excellent improvements with their drivers’ this year with their XL and SL series. You choose the weight of the driver that suits your swing, a good idea.
IRONS:
Callaway – The new Razr X irons are outstanding, good look, nice feel. They kept the Diablo Edge irons in the line-up also. For the better player they have the Razr X Tour, Razr X Forged, and my iron of choice this year the Razr X Muscleback Prototype.
Nike – They kept their Slingshot and SQ MachSpeed irons for 2011 for those who need the forgiveness in their irons. For the mid handicap player their Vr Pro Cavity iron is an excellent choice. For the better player you just cannot beat the Vr Pro Combo Irons, forgiveness in the long irons, split cavity in the mid irons, and a blade for the 8, 9, and PW, awesome set. If your swing and game is really good you could opt for the TW Vr Pro Blades. I would not recommend these unless you are a scratch player.
Taylor Made – One of the hottest irons I have tested this year is the Burner SuperFast 2.0, it comes off the face like a rocket, awesome iron. Another excellent choice from Taylor Made for the better player is their Tour Preferred MB, beautiful iron.
